4 K-Beauty Ingredients That Are Becoming Extremely Popular

“Ginseng is a small plant with fleshy roots,” quotes Dr. Jaishree. She explains: “Traditional Asian medicine is an herb that is used in skin care. Rich in a host of bioactive compounds like different types of B vitamins – B1, B3, B5, B12, minerals, essential oils, peptides and amino acids that are important in boosting skin radiance, it is also a good source of antioxidants and therefore, it protects the skin from damage caused by free radicals. The herb is increasingly present in serums, ampoules and creams; the reasons are many – “It has anti-aging properties and is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. It increases blood circulation and oxygenation, which stimulates collagen synthesis and makes the skin firmer. Dr. Jaishree also notes its effectiveness against dullness, dark circles, atopic dermatitis, acne, psoriasis and puffiness.

Mushrooms

Before diving deep into the benefits of mushrooms, I was curious if all species of mushrooms perform equally well. Dr. Jaishree refutes, “Only certain mushrooms have benefits for the skin.” She spills the beans: “Shiitake is known to contain kojic acid, which is a skin lightening agent, so it can be used to reduce dark spots or to even out skin tone. Reishi mushroom has healing properties, so it can be helpful in acne scars. It also has antityrosinase activity which helps reduce dark pigmentation and the antioxidants reduce oxidative stress.

Snail mucin

Snail mucin has taken the internet by storm. A part of every second viral TikTok video, snail mucin is nothing but snail excretion. “It hydrates the skin and keeps it hydrated. It repairs damaged skin and improves skin elasticity. Snail mucin is also packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an effective anti-aging solution,” says Dr. Jaishree.

Birch sap juice

What is birch sap juice, if you ask – it’s the juice extracted from birch trees, native to Iceland and found in parts of Europe and Asia. “Birch sap juice is rich in amino acids, minerals, vitamin B3 and niacinamide,” says Dr. Jaishree. Speaking of the benefits, “It helps reduce skin inflammation and retain moisture to maintain the skin’s barrier function.” Great news she tells, “It can also be used by sensitive skin.”

Overall, Dr. Jaishree is of the opinion that these ingredients mainly thrive in skin care as they focus on hydration, nourishment and minimizing various skin issues on the top surface. The first two ingredients – Mushrooms and Ginseng – have been studied and allergic reactions, hives and angioedema have been reported. Generally, Dr Jaishree advises, “A reaction to any of these in the form of hives or itchy rashes is possible. It is therefore necessary to do a patch test.
